A Chicago man was shot and critically wounded Wednesday evening while visiting his sister in northwest Indiana.

A few minutes before 7 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1300 block of Michigan Avenue in Hammond, Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

A 21-year-old Chicago man had been shot once in the leg, Hoyda said. He was taken to a trauma hospital in critical condition.

Hoyda said the man was visiting his sister with other family members. An argument took place shortly before the shots were fired.

A 21-year-old East Chicago man was taken into custody, Hoyda said.

Anyone with information should call Det. Lt. Mark Tharp at (219) 852-2988.
