Three people were shot, leaving one dead Sunday afternoon in south suburban Sauk Village.

The shooting happened about 4 p.m. in the 21700 block of Peterson Avenue, Sauk Village Police Chief Robert Kowalski said.

Mustafa Carter, 23, was taken to St. Margaret Health in Dyer, Indiana, where he died at 4:20 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner’s office. Carter lived about a half-mile from the shooting scene, in the 21700 block of Gailine Avenue.

Two other people were taken to hospitals and later released after being treated for gunshot wounds, Kowalski said. He declined to provide more details Sunday night, citing the ongoing homicide investigation.

The men, 18 and 20, were in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street about 9:20 p.m. when two people got out of a light-colored sedan and fired shots. They were hospitalized in fair condition.
