A 26-year-old woman was shot to death Thursday evening at her northwest Indiana home.

Officers performing a welfare check at 4:08 p.m. in the 200 block of Taft Place arrived at the home to find the door open, according to Gary police.

They found Mariah Jones in the bedroom “with no signs of life,” according to Gary police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Jones, who lived in the home, had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to the coroner’s office. She was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m.

Her death was ruled a homicide, the coroner’s office said.
