A Northwestern professor who is wanted on charges of murdering the man he shared his River North apartment with has allegedly sent a video to friends and family apologizing for his role in what happened, Chicago Police said.
Investigators have been in contact with the friends and family of Northwestern University associate professor Wyndham Lathem, 42, a microbiologist who shared his River North apartment with the victim, 26-year-old Trenton H. James Cornell-Duranleau, but Chicago Police are declining to release the video.
“The contents of the video message are integral to any future interrogation efforts; therefore, we can not disclose the video at this time,” Chicago Police said in a statement.
A warrant is out for the arrest of Lathem and Andrew Warren, an Oxford University employee.
Warren said he wanted to find a dominant person on the gay dating app Grindr and had “no limits,” according to the Sun, a London tabloid.
Screenshots of his profile indicate he was registered under the names “Anything Goes,” “No Limits” and “GoneForever2015,” according to the Sun.
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported Thursday that Lathem and Warren drove to Lake Geneva after the slaying to donate $1,000 in the victim’s name to the Lake Geneva Public Library.
“The victim was savagely killed,” a source told Sneed Thursday. “The crime scene was covered in blood. The body was mutilated. His genitals were cut, mutilated. It was so savage it broke the knife found at the crime scene, a 10th floor apartment at 540 N. State St. belonging to professor Lathem.”
