Donald DeWitte has won the 33rd District seat in the Illinois Senate, defeating challenger Nancy Zettler, according to returns as reported by the Associated Press.

Zettler, a retired lawyer, played a leading role in helping Community Unit School District 300 — which includes schools in Carpentersville, Algonquin and Hampshire — pass two referendums to pull the district out of a financial crisis in 2006. She later lobbied lawmakers to take another look at the tax breaks given to Sears Holdings Corporation in Hoffman Estates — tax dollars that would have benefited schools.

Incumbent DeWitte, formerly the mayor of St. Charles, was appointed to the seat over the summer. He did not participate in the Sun-Times endorsement process or submit a completed questionnaire outlining his platform.

The Sun-Times endorsed Zettler for the 33rd District Illinois Senate seat, saying “If residents of the 33rd District want a state senator who will vigorously pursue causes that matter to them, we recommend Democrat Nancy Zettler of Algonquin.”
