Chicago Police officer shoots, seriously wounds man in Back of the Yards

A Chicago Police officer shot and seriously wounded a man Sunday evening after a traffic stop in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Officers pulled over a Dodge Magnum about 8 p.m. just south of 43rd Street on Ashland Avenue. The stop was part of a narcotics investigation, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

As officers were taking the three occupants out of the Dodge, one of the men pushed an officer and ran, Guglielmi said. The man ran behind tractor trailers on 43rd Street, where an officer chased him and shot him multiple times.

The man, whose exact age wasn’t yet known, was undergoing surgery at Stroger Hospital Sunday night, Guglielmi said. He was listed in serious, but stable, condition and was expected to survive.

A 17-year-old boy sitting in a nearby Dunkin’ Dontus said he saw police pull over the Dodge and then chase a man who was running.

Shootings “happen all the time around here,” he said, declining to give his name. “I’m scared.”

The boy said he saw the man who was shot throw an object onto the roof of the nearby Ashland Cold Storage warehouse. Officers were later seen on the roof of the warehouse canvassing for evidence.

No weapons were recovered at the scene and no officers were injured.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on routine 30-day administrative leave as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates the incident.
