A dog was saved from a fire Wednesday afternoon at a massive west suburban Hinsdale house.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., crews went to the house in the 300 block of East Sixth Street and found light smoke coming from the second floor balcony, according to spokesman Steve Tullis of the Hinsdale Fire Department.

The house’s residents weren’t home, but contractors who were working on the house said the family’s dog was still inside, Tullis said. Firefighters rescued the dog and continued to battle the blaze, which they found had spread into the walls and empty spaces in the home.

Crews put out the fire by 8 p.m. with a total of 20 companies and almost 100 firefighters from Hinsdale and neighboring towns responding to the scene, Tullis said.

The house was significantly damaged, but no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
