1 killed, 2 wounded in Hyde Park shooting

A man was killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting Friday night in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the South Side.

About 10:40 p.m., they were standing in a group of people in the 1600 block of East 53rd Street when gunfire erupted, Chicago Police said.

Maurice Jamar Lewis, 40, was shot in the back of the head and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died at 6 p.m. Saturday, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said. He lived in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side.

A 31-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while a 31-year-old woman was shot multiple times, police said. Both their conditions stabilized at University of Chicago.

In addition, a 33-year-old woman suffered lacerations from shattered glass and a 34-year-old woman suffered scrapes and bruises during the attack, police said. They were also treated at University of Chicago.

Area Central detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.
