Madysen Meyer, bad cough and all, did it right her first time deer hunting. Within an hour and a half of opening morning Saturday of Illinois’ three-day youth season, she shot her buck in McDonough County.

“It was Amber Banach (her mom) and I,’’ Pete Banach messaged. “Her and I sat in a two-man ladder and I had set up a hang-on for Mom to sit in. LOL. Just cool all three of us being up there. Tears of joy in the end.’’

BOTW, the celebration of hunting bucks and their stories (the stories matter) around Chicago outdoors, runs Wednesdays in the Sun-Times, as warranted.
