Man critically injured in head-on vehicle crash in North Barrington

A man was critically injured Dec. 18, 2019, in a head-on vehicle crash in northwest suburban North Barrington.

A man was critically injured Wednesday in a head-on vehicle crash in northwest suburban North Barrington.

About 12:45 p.m., officers responded to a traffic crash on Route 12 near Timberlake Road and found an SUV and semi-truck severely damaged, Lake County police said.

A preliminary investigation found that the 2003 Mercedes-Benz SUV, driven by a 44-year-old Palatine man, was headed north on Route 12 near Timberlake Road when, for reasons unknown, he crossed the grassy median and drove into oncoming traffic, police said. He struck a southbound semi-truck carrying a trailer, causing his SUV to roll into a ditch.

The man was flown to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries, police said.

Both southbound and northbound lanes were closed until about 4 p.m., police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Crash Investigations Unit is handling the case.
