A pedestrian was fatally struck by a freight train Monday afternoon in suburban Northbrook.

The person was hit by an outbound Canadian Pacific Railway train about 2:30 p.m. at the Northbrook station at 1401 Shermer Rd., according to a Metra spokesperson.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at 5:43 p.m., the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Additional details about the death have not been released.

A Canadian Pacific Railway spokesperson did not immediately reply Monday evening to a request for further details.

Metra service on the Milwaukee District-North line was affected for several hours into the evening rush, the Metra spokesperson said. The inbound track was opened about an hour after the crash, and the evening schedule was shuffled to accommodate track restrictions.
