Brock Osweiler and John Elway's son were friends in college

For a while there, it looked like Jack Elway might follow in his dad’s footsteps.

The high school star from Colorado enrolled at Arizona State, ready to take aim at John Elway’s passing legacy. But Jack quickly realized football wasn’t for him, and the redshirt freshman dropped from the Sun Devils team in 2009.

With the quarterback position wide open, a 6-7 true freshman stepped in to take the majority of snaps—Brock Osweiler.

Osweiler, who will start for John Elway’s Broncos this Sunday against the Bears, remained friends with the executive vice president’s son throughout their time at Arizona State.

The Broncos took Osweiler in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Soon after, he talked with Fox 31 of Denver about his relationship with the Elways:

Osweiler was also recruited to play basketball at Gonzaga. Football was probably the right call. He turned pro after his junior year.

John Elway has high hopes for him, or he wouldn’t have gambled a second-round pick on the lanky signal-caller.

“There’s not a better situation for Brock to be in and us to be able to set up the organization for 10 to 15 years, hopefully, to have somebody at that position you believe has the ability to win a Super Bowl,” Elway told FoxSports.com in August of 2012.
