BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is adding Instagram co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom to its board of directors.

The world’s largest retailer said Systrom, 30, will become the 15th member of the board and serve on its technology and e-commerce committee, as well as its compensation, nominating and governance committee.

Founded in 2010, photo-sharing app Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012.

Wal-Mart chairman Rob Walton said the move is in part to help expand the company’s e-commerce offerings.

“Kevin’s passion and deep knowledge of social media align with our focus to engage customers through our digital and physical channels,” he said.
