A 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting in the 4000 block of West 73rd Avenue, Oct. 3, 2019, in Merrillville, Indiana.

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday in northwest Indiana.

Authorities responded to the 4000 block of West 73rd Avenue in Merrillville and found Jonas Smith with gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

He was pronounced dead at 5:55 a.m., the coroner’s office said. His death was ruled a homicide.

Merrillville police did not immediately respond to a request for information on the shooting.
