1 killed, 6 wounded in Thursday shootings

Shootings across Chicago on Thursday left at least one person dead and six others wounded.

The day’s fatal gun violence incident claimed the life of a 42-year-old man in Garfield Park.

John H. Pinkston, Jr. was outside in the 3600 block of West Schrader Drive when a black vehicle drove up to him and someone inside fired shots, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Pinkston was struck in the neck and chest about 6:15 p.m., authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In non-fatal shootings, a 2-year-old boy was among three wounded in a drive-by in Albany Park a few hours later.

About 9 p.m., they were in a car parked in an alley in the 4900 block of North Kedzie Avenue, police said. A Hyundai pulled up and someone inside unleashed gunfire.

The toddler was hit in the elbow and was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, police said. His condition was stabilized.

A 25-year-old man was struck multiple times on the side of his body and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. A woman, 29, was taken to the same hospital with gunshot wounds to her abdomen. Their conditions were stabilized.

About a half hour later, a man was hurt in Thursday’s latest gun violence incident in South Shore.

The 28-year-old was in the 1600 block of East 79th Street about 9:36 p.m. when he was shot in the lower back, police said. He provided “conflicting stories” to authorities on what took place.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Earlier, in Roseland, a 17-year-old boy was wounded in another drive-by.

Someone in a vehicle fired shots at the teen about 5:24 p.m. when he was walking on a street in the 300 block of West 114th street, police said. He was hit in the leg, and his condition was stabilized at Roseland Community Hospital.

Thursday’s earliest shooting happened in Englewood on the South Side.

About 3:53 p.m., a 28-year-old man was driving south in the 6800 block of South Throop Street when he heard gunfire and felt pain, police said. He was hit in the arm and thigh.

He drove himself to Holy Cross Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Wednesday, two people were killed and four others were wounded in shootings within city limits.
