A 28-year-old man was shot to death Thursday in Austin on the West Side.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert about 12:40 a.m. in the 5100 block of West Thomas Street and found the man unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body, Chicago police said.

Jonathan Washington was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the Austin neighborhood.

An autopsy released Friday found he died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A witness told police the man was sitting in a vehicle on the corner when someone dressed in black approached from behind and fired several rounds into the vehicle, police said.

Area North detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.
