Today at the Chicago International Film Festival: ‘The Commune’

The Chicago International Film Festival continues through Oct. 27 at AMC River East 21, 322 E. Illinois.

After Rik (Ulrich Thompson) inherits his father’s large house in Copenhagen, this architecture prof moves in with his TV reporter wife and their 14-year-old daughter. “I’m bored, Erik. I need change,” says his wife. “I need to hear someone else speak. Otherwise I’ll go mad. This huge, fantastic house should be filled with fantastic people.” The commune they form is the backdrop for an affectionate marital melodrama, not quite an occasion for social commentary. Thomas Vinterberg (“The Celebration”) says he draws on his experiences growing up on a commune: “It was a crazy, warm and fantastic time, surrounded by genitals, beer, highbrow academic discussions, love and personal tragedies.” Spritzes of humor skewer adults who are forgivably incompetent at managing their lives. 8:30 p.m. Oct. 14, 1 p.m. Oct. 15.
