Bears chairman George McCaskey, who earned his reputation as the ticket office director, was stunned by the death of fan Chris Pettry in Jacksonville.

“Just a tragic situation,” McCaskey said Tuesday. “We certainly feel for the family. I’m very proud of our players and the way they’ve banded together to help out the family.”

Bears tight end Kellen Davis hosted a fundraiser at John Barleycorn in Wrigleyville Saturday and receiver Brandon Marshall has separated offered his support to widow Karen Pettry of Lake Villa.

But the organization has also stepped up.

“The organization has reached out to the family,” McCaskey said, “and were going to leave the nature of the response between the Bears and the family.”
