Joe and Tina Simpson — the parents of singers-actresses Jessica and Ashlee Simpson — are splitting up.

Tina filed the official divorce papers in McLennan County, Texas last month, according to Entertainment Tonight. The legal reason for the separation, according to the papers: “The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.”

The National Enquirer reported that Joe Simpson gathered the family to break the news he has a boyfriend, and was coming out of the closet. Simpson’s family released a statement in response to that story, denying any third party.

“It is an amicable split and there is no third party involved,” a Simpson family rep tells People. “Any other related allegations are completely false. The family appreciates your respect for their privacy at this time.”

Joe and Tina were married in 1978 and they both played roles in the professional careers of their daughters. Joe was a producer on the MTV reality series “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” starring Jessica Simpson and then-husband Nick Lachey. Joe Simpson also produced several of Jessica’s movies including “Employee of the Month” and “Blonde Ambition” as well as Ashlee’s film “Undiscovered.”
