Michelin Guide releases Chicago restaurant ratings for 2014

Alinea, the widely celebrated gastronomic bastion of chef Grant Achatz in Lincoln Park, retained its vaunted three-star rating in the 2014 Chicago Michelin Guide to area restaurants.

A couple of local spots earned two stars: Grace (652 W Randolph) is new on the scene. Sixteen, in the Trump Tower (401 N. Wabash), rose from one star in 2013 to two this year. Graham Elliot in River North (217 W. Huron) and L2O in Lincoln Park (2300 N. Lincoln Park West) kept their respective two-star ratings.

“This year’s selection just confirms that Chicago is continuing its upward trend and has become one of the most exciting and dynamic dining destinations in the country today,” said Michael Ellis, international director in charge of guides for Michelin.

And while Michelin’s two- and three-star ratings get the most attention, Ellis added, earning one star is a major feat as well.

“One star [means] you’re still cooking at an outstanding international level,” he said. “One star is still a huge accomplishment for any chef.”

And while there’s only one three-star restaurant (Alinea) among this year’s Chicago 25 selections — of a mere 100 globally and still down from two in 2011 — Ellis said that could change.

“In Chicago, it’s only a matter of time. The star evolution will continue its upward trend, I’m absolutely convinced. The alchemy is here… So I think the future for fine dining in Chicago has never been greater.”
