SHARE Watch: Pizzagate continues - Marc Malnati wins truce from Jon Stewart

Much like a deep dish pie itself, this is the pizza gift that just keeps giving/won’t die.

The Daily Show host Jon Stewart opened the Wednesday show with a riff on the Great Pizza War he began with a show last week in which he trashed Chicago style pizza as casserole – part of a lengthy tirade that also included insults about the Willis (nee Sears) Tower, murder rates and hots dogs.

Stewart didn’t say anything about the rest of his targets, but he did offer a mea gulpa to Lou Malnati’s top slice Marc Malnati, who himself has been crusading in the streets of New York to raise expectations for what pizza can be.

The barbs drew ire from Twitter – Stewart highlighted a death wish tweet – Chicago pizza purveyors and even stretched to the halls of Congress with an indignant Mike Quigley weighing in. Even Mayor Emanuel got involved with a dead fish dish delivered to the TDS studio.

(Never mind whether deep dish is the best pizza Chicago has to offer).

Nope, it’s all over. After a brief skit featuring TDS regulars and celebrities singing the praises of the magic of New York slices, Stewart welcomed Malnati on stage to bury the fork in the simmering feud. After a brief quibble over paper plate use and whether a knife and fork were needed – Stewart eschewed utensils – a bite was taken and piece peace was achieved.

“A truce. Truce. Chicago and New York.”

Stewart then found the true common ground – at least neither city is pushing California pizza.

And, after coming back from commercial break, Stewart admitted: “it is quite good.”

Well done, Malnati’s. Well done. Now, let’s make it all stop.
