(CRYSTAL LAKE) A 15-year-old boy drowned Thursday evening after jumping into a pond behind a northwest suburban Crystal Lake home during a party.

Jose A. Esquivel, 15, was pulled from the pond behind the home in the 6100 block of Haligus Road, the McHenry County Coroner’s office said in a release.

Rescue crews responded about 9 p.m. and located the boy about an hour and a half later, according to a statement from the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department. Parts of the pond are reportedly about 20 feet deep.

The teenager had been at a party for another teen at a residence there, the McHenry County Sheriff’s office said.

Witnesses told police the boy stripped off pieces of his clothing and jumped in the pond from a pier. When he did not surface, the fire department was called, the statement said.

Esquivel was pronounced dead at Centegra Woodstock Hospital at 11:43 p.m. Thursday, the coroner’s office said.

An autopsy Friday found he drowned, the coroner’s office said. Further studies are pending, but no foul play or suspicious circumstances are suspected.

The sheriff’s office said nothing indicated that alcohol or drugs were a factor, and there was no indication of criminal activity.
