(HARWOOD HEIGHTS) A bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening in northwest suburban Harwood Heights.

Jose Romero, 50, was riding a bicycle in the 4900 block of North Harlem Avenue when he was struck, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

A woman was pulling out of a business’ driveway and checking for oncoming traffic to her left when the bicyclist passed in front of her from the right, Harwood Heights Police Chief James O’Grady said.

Romero, of the 4800 block of Knight Avenue in Norridge, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 5:31 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The woman who struck him was cited for failure to yield, O’Grady said.

“It was just a tragic accident,” according to the chief.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
