A young boy accidentally shot his 3-year-old sister Friday afternoon while they were left alone in their father’s car outside a day care in Gary, Indiana.

About 4 p.m., the father left his children in the car while he went inside a day care in the 1000 block of Tyler Street, according to Gary Police Department Sgt. Thomas Decanter.

While he was inside, the 6-year-old boy found a loaded handgun, Decanter said. The boy was playing with the gun when it went off and shot the girl in the left hand.

The girl was taken with non-life-threatening injuries to Methodists Hospital in Gary, Decanter said. She was later transferred to a Chicago hospital for additional treatment.

No charges have been filed against the father yet, but Decanter said the case will be presented to prosecutors Monday.
