A man died after he was struck by a CTA bus that he was chasing in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side late Thursday.

Michael Switzer, 23, was running after an eastbound No. 72 bus about 10:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of West North Avenue, hitting the side of it with his hand to try and get it to stop, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

When the bus driver stopped, Switzer was found on the ground with injuries, police said. He came into contact with the bus, but police at the time did not believe he was run over.

Switzer, of the 5400 block of South Wood, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy showed he died of multiple injuries from a bus striking a pedestrian.

CTA spokesman Jeff Tolman confirmed the accident occurred and that the agency was cooperating with the CPD Major Accident Investigation Unit.
