A man was killed and two other people injured Wednesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on the Stevenson Expressway that caused huge backups during the morning rush.

Two SUVs and a car collided about 5:45 a.m. in the inbound lanes of the expressway (I-55) near Throop Street in the South Side Bridgeport neighborhood, according to Illinois State Police.

Enrique Moreno, 28, of the 4500 block of South Troy, was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later, authorities said.

Another person injured in the crash was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Roccasalva said. A third was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Mercy Hospital.

State Police said the crash was caused by “an unsafe lane change,” but did not elaborate Wednesday evening, citing the ongoing investigation.

Three northbound lanes of the expressway were closed to traffic for nearly three hours, but all lanes were reopened by 8:20 a.m., according to State Police.
