Man found seriously injured with blunt trauma to head in Fernwood

A man who was seriously injured Monday morning in the Far South Side Fernwood neighborhood was not shot, as police had initially reported.

The 23-year-old was found at 9:19 a.m. with blunt force trauma to his head in the 10200 block of South State Street, according to Chicago police. He was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Preliminary reports indicated that the man had been shot, but when he arrived at the hospital doctors realized he had actually suffered blunt-force injuries caused by an unknown object, police said. A piece of metal was embedded in his head.

Further details were not available as Area South detectives investigated.
