The Packers waived former Bears tight end Martellus Bennett on Wednesday with a failure to disclose a medical condition designation, allowing Green Bay to attempt to recoup some of his signing bonus.
Bennett signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Packers in March after winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots, but played in only seven games. He had been dealing with a shoulder injury and said late last month that he might retire at the end of the season.
Bennett had 90 catches for 916 yards in 2014, setting Bears records for a tight end. He stayed away from Halas Hall the following offseason, hoping in vain that new GM Ryan Pace would give him a new, richer contract. A year later, the Bears, tired of his locker room behavior, traded him to the Patriots.
Despite Zach Miller’s injury, a Bears reunion is unlikely. Bennett can be claimed off waivers Thursday.
