A 10-year-old boy returned home safely after he was left sitting inside a SUV that was stolen Tuesday morning from the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

At 5:47 a.m., a suspect jumped in the SUV, which was running while the boy waited for his mother to take him to school in the 2000 block of North Kildare, according to Chicago Police.

The boy told CBS2 he was in the backseat waiting when a teenage girl jumped in and drove off. He said the SUV struck two vehicles while the girl was driving, then stopped in an alley where she met an accomplice.

The suspect dropped the child off in the alley about four blocks from his home, police said. He walked home, safe and unharmed.

No one was in custody and the car had not been recovered as of early Tuesday afternoon as Area North detectives continue to investigate.
