Two boys were in police custody Sunday after a man shot one of them during a burglary attempt in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

At 8:26 a.m., a 61-year-old man went to a residence under renovation in the 6600 block of South Rhodes, Chicago Police said. When he arrived at the home he found the door open and went inside to investigate. Inside the home, he confronted two boys — ages 11 and 16 — and shot the teenager in the lower back and right hand.

Both boys ran from the home, but were taken into custody nearby, police said.

The 61-year-old had a valid state concealed carry license, police said. Charges were pending against both boys, but no charges were filed against the man Sunday afternoon.

The teenager was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said. The younger boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital for treatment of a laceration to his head. It was not immediately known if he suffered the injury inside the home or during his arrest.

The case remained under investigation Sunday afternoon.
