A head-on collision in northwest suburban Volo on Saturday sent five people to hospitals.

Deputies were dispatched at 4:07 p.m. to a crash on Route 12 south of Route 120 in Volo, according to the Lake County sheriff’s department. Both vehicles sustained severe damage in the crash.

A 2006 Chevrolet Impala driven north on Route 12 by a 27-year-old Chicago woman crossed over the grass median separating her lanes from southbound traffic, the sheriff’s office said. The Chevrolet collided with a Kia Sendona being driven south by a 44-year-old Round Lake Beach man.

Both drivers required extradition from their vehicles by the Wauconda Fire Department, the sheriff’s office said. The woman was taken to Condell Hospital in Libertyville with critical injuries. The man was also taken to Condell with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.

A 39-year-old woman, a 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy who were passengers in the Kia — all of Round Lake Beach — were taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The crash remained under investigation Sunday afternoon.
