A man who stole a gun from a home in southwest suburban Plainfield on Thursday morning was later found dead on Chicago’s Near West Side.

Schools were put on a soft lockdown after officers were notified of a burglary in progress at a home in the 23000 block of Ottawa Street in Plainfield, according to Plainfield police.

While headed to the home, officers were told that a gun had been stolen and the suspect already left the area.

Due to the proximity of several schools to the home, officers requested the schools be put on a soft lockdown, police said.

Investigators were able to identify a potential suspect, who was later found dead in Chicago’s 12th District.

Chicago detectives are handling the death investigation as Plainfield police continue to investigate the burglary Thursday evening, authorities said
