The music, poetry and social commentary of the late Oscar Brown, Jr. will be revived Tuesday night when Brown’s protege and friend Morris Gearring performs his one-man show, “Joy,” at the Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth Court.
Accompanied by Calvin “Koco” Brunson and his band, Gearring will recreate a theatrical and musical piece that originally was created by Brown and Jean Pace in Chicago back in 1966. The new production has been directed by Chuck Smith, an award-winning resident director at the Goodman Theatre.
Brown, who died in 2005, created music that was a blend of soul, jazz and musical theatre that dealt with the joy, anger, love, frustration and humor of Black life in Chicago. At the time of his death, Gearring made a commitment to continue to introduce his words and music to new audiences going forward.
