Local film fans will get an early look at upcoming films starring Cate Blanchett, Sarah Silverman and Michael Caine at this fall’s Chicago International Film Festival.
Planners on Thursday announced 24 titles booked at the Oct. 15-29 festival, with more to revealed in the coming weeks. Among those on the way: “Carol,” Todd Haynes’ 1950s-set love story pairing Blanchett with Rooney Mara; “I Smile Back,” with Silverman as a self-destructive housewife, and “Youth,” starring Caine as a retired composer vacationing with an old friend (Harvey Keitel).
This year’s Palme d’Or winner at Cannes, Jacques Audiard’s “Dheepan,” will screen, as will a recently unearthed 1916 Sherlock Holmes tale shot at Chicago’s Essanay Studios. Two documentaries will be of local interest: “For Grace,” about chef Curtis Duffy opening his restaurant Grace, and “Syl Johnson: Any Way the Wind Blows,” about the Chicago bluesman.
The festival also announced tributes to “The Lord of the Rings” composer Howard Shore on Oct. 18 and producer Gigi Pritzker on Oct. 22.
The other announced titles are: “45 Years” (England), “An” (Japan), “Brooklyn” (England/Ireland/Canada), “Cemetery of Splendor” (Thailand), “Cuckold” (South Africa), “Eisenstein in Guanajuato” (Netherlands), “Hitchcock/Truffaut” (USA), “The Homecoming” (Iceland), “The Infinite Happiness” (France/Denmark), “James White” (USA), “Mia Madre” (Italy), “Orphans of Eldorado” (Brazil), “A Perfect Day” (Spain), “They Look Like People” (USA) and “The Thin Yellow Line” (Mexico).
