The National Weather Service’s forecast for Chicago.

After an unusual April snowfall Saturday, the Chicago area should see a sunny, warm Sunday.

“It’s like a different season every day,” National Weather Service meteorologist Ricky Castro said Saturday, a day Chicagoans awoke to snow and wind gusts that topped 55 miles an hour. “It’s spring.”

The last time it snowed in April in Chicago was two years ago, when 1.4 inches fell on April 14, 2014. Chicago’s record snow for April 2 was 9.4 inches, set in 1975.

“Nobody wants winter weather,” Castro said. “But we had it pretty easy this winter.”

When there’s enough cold air around, you’ll see snow even in April, he said.

On Sunday, though, the temperature should hit 60 degrees. But that’s only another spring tease, Castro said.

“It’s a roller-coaster ride with strong southwest winds,” he said. “We could see wind gusts around 40 miles an hour out of the southwest, and it’ll be much warmer.”

But another cold front will quickly follow, he said, with Chicago falling back into the upper 30s by Sunday night.
