A South Side man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for fatally shooting his two roommates in their Woodlawn apartment in 2012.
Michael Myrieckes, 56, was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder on Jan. 21, according to Cook County court records.
Two men, 68-year-old Avelino Sanchez and 49-year-old Lori Inman, were found unresponsive in the 6500 block of South Kenwood Avenue on the night of May 12, 2012, authorities said at the time. They were discovered after police received a call from someone who said their friend was going to kill his roommates.
When officers arrived, Myrieckes was still there and was armed, police said. He refused to leave the apartment for about 40 minutes before surrendering.
Sanchez and Inman, who lived in the home where the shooting took place along with Myrieckes, were both dead at the scene from shotgun wounds, authorities said at the time.
Judge Vincent Gaughan sentenced Myrieckes to 23 years in prison for each count, but the sentences will run concurrently, according to court records. He will receive credit for three years and 333 days served in the Cook County Jail.
He was admitted to Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill to begin serving his sentence Saturday.
