A person is in custody after a Chicago Police officer was shot Monday afternoon in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Uniformed officers were on patrol in the area near the 2300 block of South Trumbull about 4:15 p.m. when they saw three people “who looked suspicious,” Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters outside Stroger Hospital on Monday evening.

While officers were filling out an incident report, the three took off, Johnson said. But police caught up to one of them in the alley between Trumbull and Homan and used a stun gun on him and took him into custody, Johnson said. A weapon was recovered.

At some point during a foot chase, the officer was shot in the shoulder.

The officer, a man with nine years in the department, was taken to Stroger Hospital. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, Johnson said. A second officer suffered a cut to his hand.

“This is a good example of officers being pro-active and doing what we want them to do,” Johnson said. “They were doing the right thing.”

The other two people initially seen by officers were not in custody Monday evening, Johnson said.

Earlier this month, an officer was shot with a pellet gun in Austin, and in mid-March, three officers were shot in the Homan Square neighborhood.

“That’s just another example of the proliferation of guns out here on the streets of Chicago,” Johnson said.
