A man with a gun was shot by a Chicago Police officer Sunday night in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, officials said.
At 9:04 p.m., officers assigned to the Puerto Rican Festival in Humboldt Park approached a “suspicious male subject” walking with a large group of people, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy told reporters at the scene that he was “exhibiting behavior consistent with carrying a weapon,” before he ran way from the officers.
The officers chased him toward North and Washtenaw avenues, saw that he had a handgun in his hand and ordered him to drop his weapon, Roy said.
Police said the suspect then turned around and an officer fired at least one shot, striking him in the “lower extremities.”
Officers administered first aid, applying a tourniquet to the suspect, police said.
The man, thought to be in his 20s, was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Chief Joe Roccasalva.
Roy said another person was arrested after trying to interfere with the officers who took the first suspect into custody. Charges were pending against both suspects.
No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered on the scene, police said.
The incident will be investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings. A representative for IPRA could not be reached Sunday night.
The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, per CPD policy.
