The White Sox claimed right-hander Juan Minaya off waivers from the Houston Astros Wednesday and assigned him to AAA Charlotte.

Minaya, 25, was 1-3 with a 3.91 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 17 relief appearances and 25 1/3 innings with AAA Fresno this season before being designated for assignment on June 20 to make room on their 40-man roster for infielder Danny Worth.

The 6-4, 210-pounder from the Dominican Republic was added to Houston’s 40-man roster on November 20, 2015 after combining to go 1-0 with a 2.80 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 35 relief appearances last season between Class AA Corpus Christi and Fresno.

Minaya possesses a fastball that touches 95-96 mph, but has struggled with throwing strikes consistently.

He was signed by the Astros as a 17-year-old, non-drafted free agent in 2008. The Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
