Jason Hammel had a rough go of it in the first inning for the Cubs Tuesday night against the Tigers. And he wasn’t getting any help from the Wrigley Field crowd.

After giving up a one-out home run to Ian Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera laced a ball to deep left field. At first glance it looked as if the ball had just reached the outfield basket. However, the ball had a little help getting over the fence.

Kyle Schwarber, who is playing left field for the Cubs, immediately pointed to the fan and got the umpire crew to review the play. After roughly a two minute delay, the play was reversed and the umps sent Cabrera back to second base.

Unfortunately for both Hammel and the Cubs, it wouldn’t matter. The very next batter, J.D. Martinez, hit an absolute no-doubter into center field for a two-run home run.

Hammel would punch out the next two batters, but the damage was done. Even with the fan interference call, the Tigers had a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

Of course, immediately after the play happened, the Steve Bartman jokes started rolling in.
