Kenyan Dickson Chumba made a late move to separate from the pack in winning the men’s side of the 38th Bank of America Chicago Marathon in two hours, nine minutes, 25 seconds [corrected]

Early the men had a pack that included as many as 12 in a slow start. At mile 21 Kenyan Sammy Kitwara and Chumba separated themselves, then Chumba made his move in mile 24.

Mid-race, in an an interview on Channel 5, executive race director Carey Pinkowski summed up the race by saying, “Women are running, men are watching each other.’’

Chumba ran his personal best (2:04:32, third) last year in Chicago and won the Tokyo Marathon in February, 2014.

The elite athletes went off on a cool morning (54 degrees at the start at 7:30 a.m.) with light south winds. The weather was forecast to become more difficult for the bulk of the 45,000 registered for the race with southwest winds increasing toward 30 mph and temperatures warming into the 70s.
