Ricardo Cruz’s lake whitefish is officially the Illinois record.

Dan Stephenson, fisheries chief for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, signed off on the paperwork Wednesday afternoon. He emailed that Cruz will be receiving a wall plaque later, as in when there is a budget.

Stephenson also noted that it will be officially listed as 3 pounds, 1.6 ounces, the conversion from 3.1 pounds. Illinois lists its fish records in pounds and ounces. Cruz’s whitefish was weighed at Henry’s Sports and Bait at 3.1 pounds.

Cool.

“I remember coming out of my apartment one day and spotting Chicago cops dragging young protestors out of one section of Lincoln Park and shoving them into trucks, while nearby poet Allen Ginsberg was chanting in a circle of peaceful protesters not far away from the radical Abby Hoffman,” remembers Dan Webb, who later became a U.S. attorney.
