The driver of a semitrailer was killed in a shooting Friday afternoon on the Reagan Memorial Tollway near west suburban Oak Brook, according to state police.
Eduardo Munoz, 43, of Sunrise, Florida, was shot about 4 p.m. while he drove on Interstate 88, according to Illinois State Police.
Munoz was driving east in a 2007 Volvo semitrailer when someone fired at him from an unknown vehicle, police said. He was able to pull over to the right shoulder near mile marker 138.5 between 22nd Street and York Road.
Munoz died at Elmhurst Hospital, police said.
The far right traffic lane, and the right shoulder of the interstate, were closed for the investigation, police said.
Records suggest Munoz was from Florida but also maintained a residence in west suburban Franklin Park. Calls to that home and others nearby were not answered Saturday.
Family members in Florida also could not be reached.
News helicopters monitoring the shooting Friday captured images of the trailer Munoz was driving. It appeared to be registered to DML Logistics, a trucking company based in Vernon Hills.
Contacted by a Chicago Sun-Times reporter, a DML employee declined to comment.
A representative from the Illinois State Police did not respond to further inquiries Saturday.
