A five-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on I-55 near southwest suburban Plainfield sent seven people to hospitals.

All traffic was coming to a stop in the northbound lanes at milepost 260 just north of Route 30 at 12:22 p.m. due to an earlier crash, when a Ford Expedition didn’t stop and struck a Dodge Charger, Toyota Corolla and Nissan Murano according to Illinois State Police. The Nissan Murano was then pushed into a Nissan Sentra.

Seven people were taken to hospitals, some with serious injuries, state police said.

The driver of the Expedition, a 59-year-old Joliet man, was cited for failure to reduce speed, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Reconstruction Unit.
