Man fatally shot in Hammond

A 20-year-old man was shot to death Friday night in northwest Indiana.

Officers were dispatched about 8:30 p.m. for reports of a person lying on the ground in an alley in the 6700 block of New Jersey Avenue in Hammond, Indiana, according to a statement from Hammond police.

They arrived to find 20-year-old Shermane Sargent lying on the ground outside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest, police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office said. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Calumet City.

Sargent was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, Indiana, where he was pronounced dead about 9:30 p.m., authorities said. Police said he lived in East Chicago, Indiana, while the coroner’s office listed his home address in Calumet City.

His death was ruled a homicide, according to the coroner’s office.
