A man and a woman were shot to death early Sunday in northwest Indiana.

Authorities were called about shots fired and a man with a gun at 1:56 a.m. in the 2000 block of Carolina Street in Gary, Indiana, according to a statement from Gary police. Officers arrived to find a man and a woman inside an apartment with gunshot wounds.

Van Dyke Carson, 29, and Freddie Howard, 44, were both pronounced dead at the scene at 2:56 a.m., according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Carson lived in Gary and Howard lived at the address of the incident.

They had both suffered multiple gunshot wounds and their deaths were ruled homicides, the coroner’s office said.
