A person died after being trapped inside a car he drove into Lake Michigan Friday evening near Navy Pier.

The car went into the lake about 5:30 p.m., according to Chicago Police and Chicago Fire Media Affairs.

Divers with the fire department’s Marine Unit pulled the male driver out of the water by 6:30 p.m. and tried to resuscitate him. Paramedics then took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment, according Fire Media Affairs.

Police later said the male had been pronounced dead.

His identity hasn’t been released.

He appears to have intentionally driven the car into the water, police said.
