A person was taken into custody Friday evening after an exchange of gunfire with police in the South Shore neighborhood.

Police were conducting a traffic stop about 5:45 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Kingston Avenue when the person exited their vehicle and fled on foot, according to Chicago police.

Officers followed the person and, at some point, the person pulled out a gun and fired a shots, police said.

The officers returned fire but no one was hit in the exchange, according to police.

The person was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
