Morgan Park quarterback Camron Fulton doesn’t have one favorite receiver.

He’s got a bunch of them.

“That’s like having a variety of candy,” he said after Tuesday’s 56-13 win over host Lane. “Which one do you choose? They’re all good.”

And Fulton is pretty good himself. The junior had his best game of the season, completing 13 of 19 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and running nine times for 96 yards and two more TDs. Dontrell Williams had four catches for 83 yards, Jayon Moffett had three for 83 and Deshun Britten finished with three for 49.

That helped the Mustangs (5-3, 3-1 Land of Lincoln) become playoff-eligible. Now they wait to see when they play again, which will depend on whether the Chicago Teachers Union goes on strike on Thursday. Tuesday’s game was one of those moved up in order to beat the strike deadline.

Whether the walkout happens or not, Fulton expects to keep preparing one way or another for Morgan Park’s next scheduled game on Oct. 26 at Westinghouse.

“We’re going to be leaders and practice on our own” if necessary, Fulton said.

Senior safety Semaj Brown hopes it doesn’t come to that.

“Coach (Chris James) has been telling us, ‘Just stay focused on the games and our opponents, don’t worry about (the strike talk),” Brown said.

Human nature being what it is, that’s easier said than done sometimes.

“You worry about it because you want to see if you’re going to play or not,” Brown said. “Teachers are talking about it and it’s all blowing up right now. To me, it’s nerve-wracking. We need these games to get a spot in the state playoffs.”

Neither Morgan Park nor Lane (2-6, 0-4) came out like teams playing on short rest.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Williams turned the corner around right end and raced 64 yards for a touchdown. Lane’s Nasir Latham returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a TD, and Fulton ran 14 yards for his first score on the Mustangs’ next drive.

Less than 2 1/2 minutes into the game, it was 16-7 Morgan Park.

There was another scoring flurry in the second quarter, when the teams combined for four touchdowns in a span of 85 seconds.

Morgan Park’s Ar’juan Bester had a one-yard TD run, Lane fumbled on its next offensive play and Fulton hit Williams for a 41-yard TD on the next play after that.

After Lane’s Leo Rosenfeld ran the kickoff back 80 yards for a touchdown, Morgan Park got a 59-yard scoring pass from Fulton to Moffet.

“I was just in my zone today,” Fulton said.

“He’s maturing at the right time,” James said. “We always knew he had the potential to do some really dynamic things.”

What brought out that potential, according to James, was the chance to work with former Illinois quarterback Eddie McGee.

That, plus being able to work with that sweet group of receivers.
