Snap Decision: Bears make change at long snapper

The Bears made a move on special teams on Saturday. The team waived long snapper Thomas Gafford and signed Patrick Scales to replace him.

It’s an interesting move to make at his point in the season. Special-teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers is scheduled to meet the media Wednesday at Halas Hall.

Gafford, 32, was the Bears’ long snapper for 11 games this season. Scales, 27, appeared in four games for the Ravens in 2014, including two in the postseason. Scales also has played for the Jets, Dolphins and Buccaneers.

On a rainy night in Green Bay, Gafford didn’t have any egregious miscues. But a review of the game film shows that a few snaps made punter Pat O’Donnell adjust.

Last week against the Broncos, Gafford appeared to have a low snap on Robbie Gould’s 46-yard field goal.
